Santa Fe University Press Release: "Graphic Design Students Display Artwork on Santa Fe Billboard"
In selecting the word for the billboard, my Experimental Typography class at Santa Fe University of Art and Design considered the placement first. I-25 sees a lot of traffic from commuters traveling between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. We were attracted to the conflicting meanings of BOUND: in-bound, out-bound, bound up, bounding.
In terms of imagery, we wanted something that wasn't perfectly legible on the first pass. Perhaps a commuter would drive past the first time, be merely puzzled, and make a note to get a better look next time.
For weeks we worked to create imagery that was orginal and striking. I developed my technique of combining type and abstract line imagery using hand-drawn sumi ink drawings. I would then scan the drawings and layer and color them in photoshop. My technique was voted on by the class, so I set about creating my first large-scale piece of design.
The "Bound" billboard is now hanging on the Fogelson Library at Santa Fe University of Art and Design, facing the St. Michael’s Drive main entrance.
